About

I’m a Machine Learning researcher at OpenAI in San Francisco, and finishing my Ph.D. candidacy at Univ. of Amsterdam, advised by prof. Max Welling, focused on (statistical) Machine Learning, particularly scalable Bayesian inference and learning with deep latent-variable models. Some of my contributions are the variational autoencoder (VAE) and the Adam optimizer.

I have a M.Sc. degree in Informatics from Utrecht University. My final thesis (available on the Publications page) was done with prof. Yann LeCun at New York University (NYU) in 2009. Between 2009 and 2013 I spend three years as an entrepeneur, co-founding Advanza.
In 2012 returned to Yann’s lab at NYU for a semester of research, before starting my PhD in Amsterdam with Max Welling. In December 2015 I joined OpenAI.
